Field Trips
Exploring the World Outside the Classroom
Our location on the Charleston peninsula provides us with a critical advantage, enabling our students to enjoy and explore the city's wealth of historic, cultural, and natural sights.
Available at our doorstep are carriage rides through the city, architectural walking tours of surrounding streets, and the natural resources of our adjacent lake, rivers, and harbor.

Nearby points of interest to which our students take day trips include the Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture, the Charleston Museum, the South Carolina Aquarium, the Gibbes Museum of Art, the Dock Street Theater, the Sottile Theater, Gaillard Auditorium, the Battery, Fort Sumter, Patriot's Point, Charles Towne Landing, and Bee City, as well as other outdoor experiences.
Students also participate in overnight field trips. Nearby Seabrook Island provides our fifth grade students with the opportunity to experience and explore the nature and science of the local barrier islands during a three day/two night trip to the Barrier Island Environmental Education Program. Our sixth graders travel to Orlando to take part in Disney educational programs for science and social studies. In the seventh grade, middle school students enjoy a leadership and team-building trip to a mountain campground in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where they develop personal and interpersonal skills through activities. Our oldest students' middle school study of civics and history culminates in a tour of Washington, D.C. in the eighth grade.

The D.C. trip is a wonderful extension of what we learn about in the classroom. At the beginning of the year, eighth graders learn all about the Constitution and the U.S. government. Then we go to the nation's capital and see it for ourselves! In eighth grade we also learn a lot of U.S. history, so when we visit monuments, museums and memorials, all that classroom learning comes to life in a meaningful way. The D.C. trip is a great experience that the students will never forget.
