Ms. Shelly Aksomitas, Math Teacher 6th-8th
Ms. Aksomitas (a.k.a. "Ms. A") earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and her Master of Arts in Math and Science Education from The College of Charleston. She received her Master of Arts in Secondary Administration from The Citadel. She has also completed Teacher Leadership Coursework from Walden University and holds her National Board Certification in Adolescent Math.What inspired you to be a teacher?
I was inspired by my personal love of learning and the joy that comes from being around children.
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I am a homeschool mom.
Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?
My oldest pets are my koi fish, some of which are now 15 years old and 2 feel long.
What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
I grew up on Shem Creek and still live in that area. I love walking the docks, kayaking, and fishing.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy spending time with my children outside.

Ms. Rollins Babb, Learning Specialist
Ms. Babb has been teaching since 2007. She received her BS in Elementary Education from Presbyterian College and is qualified as an Associate level Orton- Gillingham instructor.What inspired you to be a teacher?
My grandmother was a first grade teacher for 31 years. I used to love going to school with her and playing with all her teacher supplies. From the time I was 12, I babysat and have always loved working with children. From an early age, I knew I would be a teacher.What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I have earned the Associate level in Orton-Gillingham. This allows me to administer a very specific form of reading and spelling instruction to children who are dyslexic or may have a reading difference.What do you love about MPS?
Everything! The family environment, the faculty and staff, and especially the children and their amazing families.What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
Anywhere my boat will take me. I love the water and exploring the different waterways.What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Boating with my family, exercising, getting lost in a good book.

Ms. Meredith Barth, Kindergarten Science and K-3 PE Teacher
Ms. Barth has been teaching since 2005. She earned her BA in Political Science from Furman University and her MAT in Social Studies from the Citadel. She is the proud parent of two MPS alums!Why do you teach?
I teach because I love kids. Teachers are more than just educators. They are mentors and friends. I enjoy finding ways for students to reach beyond their own expectations and give them confidence to achieve things not only in the classroom, but in other areas of their lives. Seeing them have that “a-ha” moment is priceless and so rewarding.What do you want your students to get from having known you?
I want my students to learn what it means to work hard and be able to communicate well with others. Being involved in sports is not always easy, whether it’s friendly competition or extremely competitive in nature. Learning to always give your best effort and practice hard is key. If you’re playing a team sport or competing as an individual, communication is vital. Knowing how to talk to your teammates and coaches and be able to listen to feedback makes you a better player and person.What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?
When students leave my class, I want them to know what it means to be KIND to one another and have EMPATHY. I try to model these two things every day in class. I want all my students to feel accepted and good about themselves.What do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy playing tennis, working out, traveling, and spending time with my family. I cherish every moment that we spend together and look forward to making new memories.

Ms. Mary Cerato | Kindergarten Teaching Associate
Ms. Cerato earned her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from the University of Alabama.What inspired you to be a teacher?I was inspired to become a teacher because of a memorable experience with a college professor who made learning exciting, engaging, and also relatable. Her passion for teaching was what inspired me to pursue teaching myself. I love being able to help our kindergarten students discover their own passions and accomplish their goals!What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?Kindness! Treating others with kindness and also being kind to ourselves.What do you enjoy doing in your free time?In my free time, I can most often be found on the beach or on the water with my husband and our dog, spending time with family and friends, or cooking!

Ms. Valerie Chamorro | 7th & 8th Grade Social Studies and 8th Grade Literature
Ms. Chamorro earned her Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in history from the University of Michigan and her Master of Arts in History from the University of Miami.What inspired you to be a teacher?I’ve always been passionate about learning history and sharing knowledge. What truly inspired me was seeing the impact a great teacher can have on students' lives. Growing up, I had a few educators who went above and beyond to make learning engaging and meaningful, and I wanted to be that kind of teacher for others.What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?Coming from a public high school, I bring a diverse perspective on teaching strategies and student engagement. My experience has taught me how to adapt to various learning styles and backgrounds, which I believe will enrich the classroom experience here at MPS. Prior to that, I also did archival research in France, where I studied historical documents. This experience has given me a deep appreciation for primary sources and historical research, which I plan to incorporate into my lessons.What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?If students only get one thing out of my class, I want them to develop their sense of empathy. I believe it’s crucial for students to understand and appreciate different perspectives and experiences. By fostering empathy, I hope they will not only become better communicators and collaborators, but also more compassionate individuals who can positively impact their communities and the world around them.What do you enjoy doing in your free time?I love history, so in my free time I am always trying to learn more! When traveling, I force my family to historical sites and always end up with a suitcase full of books as souvenirs. I also have an 8-year-old, a 9-year-old, and a dog Mimi who takes up the rest of any free time I might have!

Ms. Carlin Connelly, French Teacher
Ms. Connelly teaches French for grades 3-8 and has been teaching since 2018. Ms. Connelly received her Bachelor of Arts in Finance and French from Wofford College and her Master of International Business from the University of South Carolina. She also holds certifications: ITTT TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) + TEFL Young Learners.
What inspired you to be a teacher?
As a student, I enjoyed being in classrooms where I felt I could be creative and supported. I now aspire to be that teacher who allows students to be creative in a supportive environment. I love the routine of school but also providing the surprise element of fun that keeps it entertaining!
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I’m a firm believer in “work hard, play hard.” I have high expectations for my students, but I also love planning breaks and fun activities for them. My favorite activities are crepe/food days and Mardi Gras. Who doesn’t love class food days?!
What do you love about MPS?
I feel that I am a respected member of a team and family. I love our team, from administration to students, to parents, to colleagues. I know that I can count on them, and they can count on me! We all work together to create the best experiences for our kids.
Any funny stories to share about teaching?
I once had a student complete her classwork with a piece of raw broccoli. She took broccoli from her lunch bag, stuck some extra pencil lead in it, and used it as a make-shift pencil!
Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?
Some of my students know this, but I was the MVP of the bowling team my senior year of high school! I love sports and played several (volleyball, basketball, and softball), but this was my only championship!
What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
I love Folly Beach - the beach itself, the restaurants, and the vibe. I’m also a big fan of doing all the tourist things downtown! It reminds me of what a historical and magical city we live in.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In the fall, I enjoy going to and watching the USC Gamecock football games with my family - I’ve been going since I was a baby! I also enjoy weekend trips to visit friends, going to concerts, and practicing photography and calligraphy.

Ms. Mandy Costa, 4th Grade Teaching Associate
Ms. Costa is the proud parent of three MPS alums. She has been teaching since 2008 and received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Winthrop University and her Master’s in School Counseling from The Citadel.
What inspired you to be a teacher?
I joined the staff at Mason Prep because all three of my own children attended MPS and, therefore, my heart was here.
What do you love about MPS?
I love that we still have some traditions that other schools have chosen to give up: The Lord’s Prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, teaching students to be good citizens and to be courteous, respectful, and kind to others and yourself.
Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?
I’m not sure how fun it is, but my husband, Jay, and I hold the school record for longest running parents.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love going out on the boat and exercising.

Mr. Alston Cowan | Business Office Assistant
Mr. Cowan received his Associate of Applied Science degree from Georgia Military College, and is earning his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Southern New Hampshire University.What do you like about working at MPS?The community is why I love Mason Prep. Ms. Martha Criscuolo, Art Teacher
Ms. Criscuolo has been teaching since 2001 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from UMass Amherst. She is also the parent of two past MPS students and is an RYT500 Yoga Teacher.Why do you teach?
I teach because of the Art teachers who made my world more colorful and encouraged me to have the confidence to try, to fail, and to keep trying until I improved.Why do you teach at Mason Prep?
I teach at Mason Prep because we are a community of humans who are committed to being kind, to respecting others, and to working hard every day.What do you want your students to get from having known you?
I’d love the students at MPS to see that learning about the world’s artists and practicing your artmaking skills makes you a better thinker, a kinder human and a more effective student in every way. Also…it’s FUN!What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?
The most important lesson to take from the MPS Art Studio is to keep an open mind to new ideas, new skills, and new ways of looking at the world. (Students will note that is art room rule #3.)What do you like to do for fun?
Whenever I get the chance to travel, I’m there! I have recently enjoyed Iceland in winter, driving a van of travelers through the Irish countryside with a stick shift on the left side of the road, and hiking up the mountains of Puerto Rico to find the perfect guava and cheese empanada. My 2020 camping adventure in the rainforests of Belize will hopefully be rescheduled!Any interesting facts about yourself?
I teach art and I teach yoga, on land and on paddleboards. I make my own bowls and mugs with my potter’s wheel, bake my own bread, boil my own jam, and raise chickens with green and blue eggs.

Ms. Michelle Diminich, 5th-6th GVC & 5th ReadingTeacher
Ms. Diminich has taught since 2014 and is an MPS parent. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality Management from Johnson and Wales and her Master of Education in Teaching and Learning from Clemson.
What inspired you to be a teacher?
I’ve always liked showing people how to do something and then seeing them be able to do it on their own.
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I taught culinary school for 5 years to ages 5-65, so I’ve seen a large variety of learners.
What do you love about MPS?
The family atmosphere in which everyone knows each other.
What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
I love Fig and Charlestowne Landing.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy reading, swimming, going to RiverDogs games, and going to Disney World!

Ms. Gigi Dobbins, Second Grade Teaching Associate
Ms. Dobbins has been a teacher since 2007, teaching pre-Kindergarten and second grade at Ashley Hall for 13 years before joining the faculty at MPS. She is the proud parent of an MPS alum. Ms. Dobbins earned her BS in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston.
What inspired you to be a teacher?
Growing up I babysat and have always loved working with children. I knew at an early age I wanted to be a teacher.
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I love getting to know each child and watching them grow daily throughout the year.
What do you love about MPS?
I love our faculty and all of our families! Everyone here is wanting the best for each other.
What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
Anywhere you can see or be on the water!

I enjoy gardening, going to the beach, exercising, and spending time with my family and friends.

Mr. Sam Duncan, Spanish Teacher
Mr. Duncan has been a teacher since 2014 and teaches Spanish for grades 3-8. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Spanish, Political Science, and Latin American and Caribbean Studies from the College of Charleston.
What inspired you to be a teacher?
I want to share my passion for travel and cultural exchange with the next generation of leaders.
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I lived and studied abroad in Havana, Cuba and have traveled to or lived in 8 other Spanish-speaking countries.
What do you love about MPS?
I love that parents are involved in their children’s education and students are motivated to learn.
Any funny stories to share about experiences with students?
I took a group of 14 high schoolers from St. John’s High School to Costa Rica. Ten of them had never left South Carolina, so I was worried about how they would handle traveling internationally. I couldn’t have been more impressed with their willingness to try and speak Spanish, hike through the wilderness, and represent our country well. You would have thought they were seasoned world travelers!
Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?
When I was a student at C of C I ended up playing pickup basketball with Andrew Goudelock. I blocked his shot when he tried to take it to the basket on me. Three years later he played in the NBA playoffs for the Lakers. Now, he plays professionally in Spain. I didn’t teach him any Spanish, but I may have motivated him to not bring anything weak into the paint!
What are your favorite spots in Charleston?
I love Folly Beach and enjoy going to RiverDogs games.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I like playing basketball and tennis. I also enjoy reading and playing the occasional video game.

Ms. Karlien Eiseman, Media Specialist and 7th Grade Literature
Ms. Eiseman received her Bachelor’s degree in Middle Childhood Education from Kent State University and her Master’s degree in Advanced Studies from the American College of Education. She is also Gifted and Talented Certified.What inspired you to be a teacher?
I've always wanted to be a teacher! I had such exceptional teachers growing up and absolutely loved school. In elementary school, I would come home and give "lessons" to my invisible students.
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I have experience living and teaching in other countries, which has helped me be open-minded. I love bringing new perspectives to the table!
Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?
Even though I have always been an English teacher, English wasn't my first language!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love taking my son to various parks, playgrounds, and museums around town.

Ms. Ashley Gaskins | Pre-K Teacher
Ms. Gaskins earned her BS in Early Childhood Education from the College of Charleston.What inspired you to be a teacher?I love learning and I have a very big family. I was always finding ways to help the younger children in my family learn new things as I learned them. Teaching became a lifetime love of mine.What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?I have experience with children during the early childhood development phase of their lives. I am always looking to learn and find new ways to approach early childhood learning in the classroom.What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?Kind words can change the world.What do you want your students to get from having known you?To be a kind friend and to love learning.Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?I was born and raised in the Charleston area, and I have never lived anywhere else.What do you enjoy doing in your free time?Anything outdoors: beach, boat, gardening, playing with my dog Murray, etc.

Ms. Anne Hall, 8th Grade GVC and Literature Teacher
Ms. Hall has been teaching since 2003. She received her Bachelor’s degree in English from Appalachian State University and her MAT in English from The Citadel. She also earned the SCISA Master Teacher designation in 2014.What inspired you to be a teacher / work in a school?
My own teachers at Ashley Hall were amazing, dedicated educators, and they inspired me from an early age. I think I have known I wanted to be a teacher ever since middle school; book report presentations (and control of the classroom) were my favorite days of the year.What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
My early experience at Trident Academy helped me to develop a teaching style that is multisensory, emphasizes review, and appeals to all learning styles. This is beneficial for all students, not just those who struggle.What do you love about MPS?
I love the freedom I have as an educator to assign projects, take field trips, create bulletin boards, play games, and think creatively about how to reach students where they are. My colleagues are pretty amazing too.Any funny stories to share about teaching?
My first attempt years ago at staging a Viking ship funeral with the 6th graders, complete with lighter fluid and a paper boat loaded with paper treasure, was a total failure. The boat floated away into the Ashley River before I could light it on fire. In 2021, I tried again, this time with a kiddie pool, and it worked perfectly. Those students were still talking about how fun it was when they were in 8th grade. That's good stuff.
Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?
I am a Charleston native and grew up just blocks away on Bull Street; I am #5 of 6 siblings; I love to sing and play the ukulele; I collect all things Edgar Allan Poe.What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
The beach at the marine lab/DNR at low tide. Shhhhh, don't tell.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Hot vinyasa yoga at HiLo; cooking delicious vegan food; playing with my yellow lab on the beach.

Ms. Erin Hauhn, K-5th Grade Computer & 1st – 3rd Grade Science Teacher
Ms. Hauhn has been teaching since 1999 and is the proud parent of two MPS Knights. She holds her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education and her Master's in Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus in Technology.
What inspired you to be a teacher?
I wanted to be a teacher since I was a kid. I used to play teacher in my play house!
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I am constantly learning and changing how I do things. I never want to be stuck doing the same old same old!
What do you love about MPS?
The family atmosphere, the great faculty, and the students.
Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?
I used to be really adventurous (before I broke my leg) and even bungee jumped. I love to travel both in the US and to other countries!
What are some of your favorite spots in Charleston?
The beach, Crust Pizza, and any Mexican restaurant.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Being with my family!

Ms. Denise Hilton, 2nd Grade Teacher
Ms. Hilton received her Bachelor of Science in Education from the College of Charleston and earned a Master Teacher certification from SCISA. She has been teaching since 1999. She is not only a teacher at Mason Prep, but also the parent of two MPS alums!
Why do you enjoy teaching?
I enjoy teaching because of the children. They make each day special. Their creativity and curiosity about learning new things brings a joy to my heart. I enjoy helping them learn and helping them discover new strengths within themselves.Why do you teach at Mason Prep?
Mason Prep has always held a special place in my heart. I am a graduate of Mason Prep, and I met one of my dearest, lifelong friends while a student here. I think that Mason Prep is an amazing place. I feel the students, parents, and faculty are like my family. I have been fortunate enough to experience Mason Prep as a student, as a teacher, and now as a parent. When I became a teacher, I knew I wanted to be at Mason Prep, and I have been blessed with this wonderful opportunity.What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from second grade?
I want my students to take with them that kindness really matters. No matter what obstacles they face, they should let their kindness create positivity.What do you like to do for fun?
I like to go to the beach, swim, and read great books. I also enjoy going to Disney World with my family.

Mr. Hal Huser, 5th/6th Grade History, 5th Grade GVC
Mr. Huser has been teaching since 1996 and loves making his lessons memorable by using games and music. He received his BA in History from James Madison University and his MAE in Social Studies from The Citadel. He is also GATE Certified through SC State University.
Why do you teach?
Since a young age I always felt a calling to teach. There are many reasons I love what I do. I enjoy working with young people and helping them to reach their full potential. I enjoy history and geography and the opportunity to share interesting stories and facts about the world in which we live. Teaching gives me a chance to use my gifts and talents in a meaningful way that allows me to, hopefully, bless others. Having the summers off is a nice perk too.Why do you teach at Mason Prep?
Teaching in a private school like Mason Prep allows me to have students several years in a row frequently. This lets me really get to know the kids and their families, which is something special that you can’t always duplicate in other schools. Mason Prep also shares my philosophy of education and my values. I feel like I can be “me” here and do my job to the best of my ability.How do you like to teach?
I figure you should teach the kind of class you wouldn’t mind sitting in. I will use any and all methods at my disposal to help my students learn. I usually do guided notes with engaging slideshows to teach the main information. To help it sink in, I sometimes perform songs I’ve written about the material. I have also been known to bust out an episode of Huser Stuffed Animal Theater to enhance a unit (whether it’s the saga of Henry VIII or the causes of World War I). I like to appeal to lots of learning styles, so we do art activities, creative writing, discussions and debates, simulations, role-plays, and fun review games to wrap it all up. Every year I try to make my class a little more interactive and student-centered.What do you want your students to get from having known you?
My goal is to help raise students who can think for themselves, make good choices, and bless others with their abilities and talents. If I can teach a little knowledge, impart a little wisdom, make someone laugh or feel better about themselves, and give kids an opportunity to shine, then I have done my job well.
What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?
I’d like them to realize that there are a lot of different kinds of people in this world, and we don’t all have to be the same. You can enjoy who you are and what you’re into without thinking less of someone who has a different ethnicity, outlook on life, or interests. Kindness and respect go a long way.What do you like to do for fun?
I enjoy reading, action/sci fi movies, music trivia, bicycling, and travel. I enjoy hanging out with my wife, daughters, and friends. I look forward to the day when Mason Prep funds my summer vacations overseas so I can do “social studies research.” You know—for the children.Any interesting facts about yourself?
I got to be an extra on several episodes of Army Wives when it was filming here. I am functionally fluent in Spanish because I lived in Argentina for several years (my dad was a colonel in the U.S. army and was stationed there three times). I can create a quality greeting card or poem for any occasion in under half an hour.

Ms. Meghan James, 7th & 8th Grade Math
Ms. James teaches seventh and eighth grade math and is a seventh grade homeroom teacher.Why do you teach?
I love that teaching is a job that is different every day, and I love how much fun my students can be. While I enjoy returning to favorite projects and lessons, there are always new things to learn and new ways to do things. Continued access to new technologies keeps the classroom evolving – there is so much available to my students in terms of visualizing math and using real world data.
Why do you teach Middle School?
Middle school is a major time of growth for students - physically, socially, academically, and emotionally - and I like helping kids navigate that great big mess! Their progress from the beginning of seventh grade to graduation is amazing.What do you want your students to get from having known you?
They make me laugh and smile every day, and I hope I can do the same for them. I also try to convince all of them to study abroad in college!What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?
Everyone can be good at math. There are a lot of different ways to look at problems, and we all don't have to think about things the same way. Mistakes are good, and we all make them!

Ms. Heather Kaiser, Kindergarten Teacher
Ms. Kaiser has been teaching since 2000. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hiram College and her Master of Education in Reading from Kent State University.What inspired you to be a teacher?
I love that I get to spend each and every day teaching little minds and watching students’ creativity spark and grow. My second grade teacher instilled the love of learning in me at a young age.What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I love teaching and am excited that I get to work with the littlest students at Mason Prep.What do you love about MPS?
I love that everyone here is so welcoming, and that Mason Prep has such a family atmosphere.Any funny teaching stories to share?
I have a student in my class this year that is the niece of a former student I taught almost 20 years ago in a different state and school. Such a small world!Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?
I am the oldest of five children. I was blessed to teach two of my younger sisters during my first few years of teaching.What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
I love eating out, especially in downtown Charleston. The food scene here is amazing!What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Gardening, traveling, and going out to eat!

Ms. Stacey Keller, Kindergarten Teacher
Ms. Keller earned her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from the University of Kentucky and her Master's degree in Elementary Education from Georgia State University.What inspired you to be a teacher?
I come from a family of teachers, and I enjoy kids! I love creating a happy, fun, and engaging environment that encourages kids to love school.
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
This is my 20th year in elementary education. I have done the Orton Gillingham Teacher Training and taught in a STEM certified school for 8 years.
What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
The beach!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love to exercise, read and spend time with my family and dogs.

I am married to my husband, Jeff, and have two grown children, Sam and Audrey.

Ms. Sara Loyola | Pre-K Teaching Associate
Ms. Loyola earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the Universidad Inca Garcilaso de la Vega in Lima, Peru.What inspired you to be a teacher?Following in my mother and sister's footsteps, they are teachers.What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?Being able to teach children different languages (Spanish and Hebrew).Any funny stories to share about experiences with students?I taught children different dances in a program I created called Dance Around the World. It was cute and funny to see their involvement and how they were trying their best to get the moves down.

Ms. Martin teaches 7th and 8th grade science as well as our STEM-focused Innovation & Design class. She has been teaching since 2012 and received her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Science Education and Bachelor of Science in Biology from Kutztown University. She also holds her certification in Early Childhood, Elementary, and Middle School Science.Why do you teach?
I teach because I strongly believe that all kids should have the opportunity to authentically connect with science, and that starts with being in a conducive environment. I take pride in creating a space that welcomes curiosity and innovation, where students begin to envision themselves as scientists through commitment and hard work.Why do you teach at Mason Prep?
Mason Prep is unique in its ability to hold high academic and character standards, while also providing a genuine, inclusive atmosphere. I want my students to leave my classroom knowing what it feels like to be successful through consistent hard work and taking risks. I want them to trust that science can lead to success in all areas of life, and most importantly, how to bring an innovative idea across the finish line. It starts with practicing productive habits, which will support them well beyond their academic years.What do you like to do for fun?
I love spending time with my family, being outside, and doing anything spontaneous, creative, or hands-on: calligraphy, watercolor painting, photography, and gardening are always at the top of my list.

Ms. Mary McNutt, 2nd Grade Teacher
Ms. McNutt has been teaching since 2014. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Saint Joseph's University and her Masters in Special Education from the University of Massachusetts, Boston.
What inspired you to be a teacher?
Teaching is my passion. I have always adored children and fell in love with teaching the moment I began my career. Kids simply make life more fun!
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
Creativity! I absolutely love taking a good lesson and making it great by adding my own flare and/or personal experiences. There are so many incredible resources out there which help to make learning truly meaningful for the kids.
What do you love about MPS?
I adore the community. The moment you step through the doors, you feel a sense of love and family that is completely unique to Mason Prep. I honestly feel blessed to teach at MPS every single day.

Have any fun facts about yourself you would like to share?
I have a two-year-old son at home, and I have become an expert on the movie ‘Cars’!

I love James Island County Park. It is a beautiful place with tons to offer. I also love Sugar bakery - best cupcakes ever!

Swimming, walking, and being outside with my family.

Mr. Tyler Merillat, PE Teacher and Assistant Athletic Director
Mr. Merillat teaches PE in our older grades and also helps head up our athletic program (Go Knights!). He earned his Bachelor of Science degree (Intervention Specialist Mild/Moderate) from Bowling Green State University and his Master of Education degree in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Oklahoma. He also holds his Resident Education License - Intervention Specialist (K-12).What inspired you to be a teacher?
I enjoy helping students grow into their full potential and open their eyes to world around them.
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
Through my experience working in education, I have been able to work with a wide variety of students from different cultures and backgrounds. This has given me a better understanding of the individual educational experience.

My father was my high school principal and I went to the same school where he worked from 7th grade through graduation.
What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
The beach, any of them!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy being outside, going to and watching all kinds of sporting events, visiting friends, and finding my favorite restaurants in Charleston.

Ms. Dietrich Parker, First Grade Teacher
Ms. Parker received her Bachelor's degree in Religion from Sewanee, The University of the South. She earned her Master's degree in Literacy Education from the Citadel. She has been teaching since 2004.
Why do you teach?
I have always had a deep love for children and knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a teacher. Watching my students learn and grow is a rewarding experience each and every day.
Why do you teach at MPS?
Mason Prep is a great community of dedicated and supportive teachers and families. I feel fortunate to have a group of peers I am able to collaborate with and continually learn from.
What do you want your students to get from having known you?
My desire is that my students feel individual worth and importance. I hope they are able to better develop their understandings of the value of respect, responsibility, and compassion toward others.
What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?
I hope my students continue to be "bucket fillers" and focus on expressing kindness, appreciation, and love on a daily basis.
What do you like to do for fun?
I cherish any time spent with family and friends. My home away from home is Sewanee, Tennessee, and I spend the majority of my time off and holidays there.

It is fun sharing my classroom with Ms. Klauber. We are old friends, and I was actually in her wedding 17 years ago!

Ms. Peyton Pinkerton, First Grade Teaching Associate
Ms. Pinkerton began her teaching career in 2021 and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston.
What inspired you to be a teacher?
My second and third grade teachers at Timothy Christian School. They made school so much fun and have been my role models ever since!
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
Growing up in Chicago, I hope to bring some new ideas from previous experiences that have worked with previous students.

The community! I have not been here for a long time, but I already feel like family.

I am originally from Chicago and moved to Charleston in 2017 to attend the College of Charleston. I moved for school and could not bring myself to leave! Luckily, my parents have followed me to escape the snow. I have a puppy named Beau and he is a rescue from Libby and Mace's Place. Most anyone who knows me knows that Beau is my absolute favorite thing.
What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
Kudu coffee! One of my absolute favorite coffee shops in Charleston...plus they are dog friendly!

I have wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I absolutely adored my teachers and wanted to be just like them! I was painfully shy, anxious, and struggled with math when I was in school. These experiences motivated me to want to help others who struggled like I did. I wanted to make sure I could provide my students with a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and feel proud when they overcome challenges.What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I love to travel and often find ways to incorporate what I've learned from visiting new places into my lessons. I am also a huge Hamilton fan, and I love using Hamilton songs to teach history.What do you love about MPS?
I love our MPS community! I love that our school is small enough to really get to know the students and their families on a deeper level. It feels like a big family.What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?
One lesson I would like for my students to take away is learning to be accepting of others and their differences. I want them to understand that everyone is unique and our differences should be celebrated. I want them to see that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and it is so important to support one another rather than bring each other down. Mr. Rangel earned his Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Performance from the College of Charleston.What inspired you to be a teacher?I think seeing the kids enjoy and get excited about whatever it is you are teaching gives the teacher joy. That is something I want to achieve as well as inspiring them.What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?I want kids to really listen and enjoy the moment of playing/creating music, it's incredibly gratifying when everything connects. Ms. Mary Lang Regen, 4th Grade Teacher
Ms. Regen is part of our 4th-grade teaching team. She teaches Math and Social Studies. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from UNC Chapel Hill.What inspired you to be a teacher?
I have always enjoyed being around kids and watching them learn. I come from a family of teachers who have all contributed to me pursuing a teaching career. I have always enjoyed helping kids develop a curiosity and interest in the world.
What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I really enjoy project-based learning. Being a young teacher, I have a lot of project ideas where students can learn through research and creativity. I also really value students developing their social-emotional skills. I encourage students to problem solve, communicate, and reflect on their feelings to be able to successfully collaborate and encourage their peers.
What is one of your favorite spots in Charleston?
We are on the hunt for our favorites! We love coffee shops, sandwich shops, gift-y shops, and parks!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy the beach, reading, running, and exploring with my dog Blue. My boyfriend and I just moved to Charleston, so we are enjoying trying new restaurants and walking around different areas of the city.

Ms. Chandler Rennison | School Psychologist
Ms. Rennison received her BA in Sociology from the College of Charleston, and both her MA in Psychology and her EdS in School Psychology from The Citadel Graduate College.What inspired you to be a School Psychologist?
My background was originally in theater at Stella Adler of NYU's TISCH. During that time, we began working with students utilizing theater to identify emotions and implement coping skills through art. This inspired me to move into mental health. I found working in schools to be one of the most proactive ways to support our children. Since I was a child, I have wanted to help those who are lost, and hence why I continue to do the work I do.What is something unique that you bring to the learning experience at MPS?
I hope to bring to the faculty, families, and children of MPS a place to be heard, seen, and validated.What do you want your students to get from having known you?
I hope any student who works with me recognizes that I trust their ability to grow and be the most wonderful person.What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time, I love going on adventures with my family, particularly a hike in the mountains, a trip abroad, or even a movie night at home. I love animals and have rescued many dogs, ducks, cats, turtles, squirrels, spiders, and even a possum or two.

It is a very gratifying job! Strangely enough, at the end of the day, I like how exhausted I am because I know I have given my students 100% of my efforts. I teach at Mason Prep because of the community/family vibe of the school. I could feel it the instant I toured the school (as a parent) looking for a school for my son. Little did I know that I would soon be lucky enough to be employed here and it would become a special part of my family's lives.What do you want your students to get from having known you?
I want my students to know how ok it is to make mistakes. We had a long talk in my class about the opportunities we can gain by learning from our mistakes. I want them to remember me as a teacher that worked with them through their mistakes and showed them how to learn from them. I hope they learn from me how to be kind to themselves and graceful with themselves. I really see them blossom when they practice this.What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?
Something I believe strongly in is building the confidence in ALL my students. I am always talking to them about the unique talents that they each have. We all have something to bring to the table in 3F. We are the "3F Fan Club." We are FOR each other in my class. We celebrate each other and how we each contribute!What do you like to do for fun?
I think most people in the Mason Prep community know how much I love yoga! I have been practicing since the year 2000. I love every style and have gotten my certification in Baptiste power yoga, prenatal yoga, and kid's yoga. I love the mental clarity it brings me, the physical challenges I create for my body, the spirituality, the philosophy behind it, and how it teaches me to use my breath. We do a good bit of it in 3F. It is a great tool for kids to help with challenges they encounter now and in the future.Any interesting facts about yourself?
I almost moved to NYC to pursue my undergrad degree in fashion merchandising, but at the very last minute, made the move to Charleston not knowing anyone here. I think I will always have a hint of regret for not living in the city when I was young, but I cannot imagine not being able to call Charleston home.

Ms. Loring Ward, 5th and 6th Grade Math Teacher
Ms. Ward has been teaching since 2011 and is a proud Mason Prep alum! She received her Bachelor's degree in Political Science from Davidson College and earned her MAT in Elementary Education from the College of Charleston.Why do you teach?
I have always wanted to be a teacher. I enjoy seeing the lightbulb go off for children and I enjoy seeing children mature and grow. I especially like teaching math and try to make it enjoyable for children. I think building the foundation and making math less scary is the key for success in high school.
Why do you teach at Mason Prep?
I loved Mason Prep as a child and thought that it really prepared me for high school and college. I love giving that same education and preparedness to our current students.
What do you want your students to get from having known you?
I want them to feel that they can be strong mathematicians and problem solvers.
What is the most important life lesson that you want your students to take from your class?
I think the most important life lesson from math is persistence. When something looks daunting, break it down to components you know and understand and often the problem becomes simple.
What do you like to do for fun?
I box at Hurricane Boxing and teach the youth classes.

Stephen Curry was in my year at Davidson and we had weightlifting at the same time.
